Short courses that look at Family and Social history, as well as finding out aspects of your own family tree. They will cover public records, searches and where to find information. All that is needed is lots of enthusiasm and a good sense of humour.

This course involves gaining the practical skills, knowledge and academic skills required to work in the Motor Vehicle Industry, specifically tyre fitting and maintenance of light vehicles. Career Opportunities are normally a Tyre Fitter or Light Vehicle Mechanic.

Family Learning is free and is available for parents, grandparents and carers. The service also provides crèche facilities for younger children. All programmes are accredited with OCN or OCR Level 1 & 2, with an opportunity to undertake a National test at the end of the course.


  • Family Numeracy – A 15 week course that provides ways to work with a child and support their numeracy development with fun activities. To make and use resources to aid development and to understand changing mathematical vocabulary.

  • Family Literacy – (15 week course) delivers ideas to work with your child and support their literacy development. To make and use resources to aid development and understand what children learn in literacy.

  • Helping in School – (15 week course) The Level 2 Progression Award includes: Work Experience (20 hours in a primary school), Understanding Diversity within Society, Building a Personal Portfolio & Improving Punctuation and Grammar Skills. You will learn about the organisation of the school, including roles and responsibilities, key terms, teaching styles and the Primary National Strategy.

  • Skills for Life Level 1 & 2 (OCR) The learner will undertake a Practice Test as a form of assessment at the beginning of the course. Individuals will be able to work at their own pace, in preparation for the National tests.

  • Art & Crafts – (10 week course) It is an opportunity for you to discover your artistic skills and share the ideas at home. The course includes: papier mache, salt dough, 3D cards, glass painting and finger puppets.

  • Computers Together – (10 week course) Fun ways to develop your skills to support your child’s computer skills. Activities include: Word processing, Clip Art, Excel, Introduction to the internet & Powerpoint.

  • Playing with Language – (15 week course) Fun ways to work with a child and increase their language skills. Activities include: Making a textured book, Making puppets, Talking boxes, Games, Everyday activities & Exploring language development.
